Primary school PE and sport funding – What is it?

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum to provide improved provision of physical education (P.E) and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport.

Eligible school funding for schools will be calculated by reference to the number of primary aged pupils (between the ages of 5 and 11), as in the annual school census in January.

Purpose of funding Schools must spend the additional funding on improving the provision of PE and sport but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Physical Education and Sport at Church Eaton

At Church Eaton we will use the money effectively in order to implement a PE programme which will ensure that all pupils leaving our school are physically literate and have the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and a lifelong love of physical activity and sport.

All pupils at Church Eaton are offered and take part in at least two hours of P.E. and sport per week. This is done through the delivery of high quality PE following the National Curriculum, active playtimes and lunch times, themed days and outdoor adventure opportunities.

As a school we promote Active 30/30 Initiative in all classes.

100% of our Year 6 pupils cohort meet the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

What impact did the sports premium funding have?

The impact on pupils of additional PE and Sports funding is measured at the end of each academic term.

  • The impact has been significant with the number of children taking part in extracurricular activities, the quality of PE provision and the school’s success in sporting competitions.
  • Paying for cover for the professional development for subject co-ordinator and teachers in PE and sport.
  • Providing transport for pupils to attend sporting competitions.
  • Increasing the number of inter-school sports competitions with local schools.
